About Weather and Outdoor
Weather and Outdoor are temporary categorizations of images that are uploaded onto Weather Underground. Photos that show up in the Current Weather and Current Outdoor galleries have been taken within the last 7 days. All images, including images older than 7 days as well as those that show up in the Current galleries, are added to the Image Archive, where they can be found via our search tools. It is important to mark the categories on your images and give them descriptive titles and captions so that they will have optimal searchability, and therefore be viewed and rated.
When determining whether an image is Weather or Outdoor, our moderators - a team of Weather Underground staff and volunteers - consider the title, caption, and categories to better understand the photographer's intent. We also analyze the image itself for obvious signs of weather and to determine the main focus of the photo.
Weather
Images that fall into any of the Severe Weather or Weather categories are generally marked as Weather images.
Severe Weather
Photos categorized under the Severe Weather heading are often important images which depict weather that affects people's lives. Many of these images may be marked VIP.

Weather
Images that include subjects listed under the Weather heading are generally marked as Weather, unless that weather is not the main focus (such as a photo of a tree with clouds far into the distance behind it).

Outdoors
Images marked with any categories under Seasons, Subjects, and Special are generally Outdoors images, unless combined with Weather categories.
Seasons
Photos that are marked as a particular season can be either Outdoors or Weather, depending on the other categories it falls under. An example of an Outdoors image would be a photo of a flower with the Spring category checked. An example of a Weather photo would be a snowstorm with the Winter category checked.

Subjects
Images that fall under the Subjects heading are generally Outdoors images unless they prominently feature a form of weather.

Special
The special category covers images that include special techniques or image quality. Images from mobile phones, for example, are usually lower in quality than photos from dedicated digital cameras. Manipulated photos are greatly altered using graphics software, such as Adobe Photoshop. Nighttime imagery often requires special photographic techniques, such as long exposures.
These images are not generally marked as Weather, although a nighttime image of star trails is considered a weather photo.

Image Archive
If an image was taken more than 7 days before the date it was uploaded, it will be put in the Image Archive. These images are searchable on our website and will show up in the user's My Photos gallery, but they will not appear in the Current Weather or Current Outdoors thumbnails on the main WunderPhotos page.
Portraits
Portraits are images that are not added to our Image Archive, but rather they are used as profile images. These often include images of our members, their families and pets. These photos cannot be rated. If you upload an image that was taken indoors, rather than rejecting it, moderators may choose to make it a Portrait image instead.
The Portrait upload page can be found in the WunderPhoto Options menu under My Photos.
