Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. About 85% of the storms occur between August 1 and October 15.

There are a couple of reasons why they only occur at these times:

  1. Hurricanes thrive on warm ocean water (I believe 80 F or higher, but I could be wrong). The ocean waters in the Caribbean, southern Atlantic, and Eastern Pacific are only warm enough to sustain hurricanes in the summer and fall. The southern hemisphere waters are warm during our winter and spring, therefore there are hurricanes in the southern hemisphere during that time.
  2. The upper level winds (winds at higher levels in the atmosphere) are stronger in the winter than they are in the summer over the northern hemisphere. Hurricanes are basically ripped apart by there stronger winds. Therefore they can not form in the winter.
